BUILDING SIGNAGE - PHOTO CORNER DESIGN
INTRODUCTION
This building signage design is a critical element in the wayfinding and
institutional branding strategy for the outdoor area of Pusat Pengembangan
Bahasa (P2B - Language Development Center). Unlike conventional signage that
serves purely functional purposes, this monument is designed as a landmark
integrating identification, orientation, and documentation functions.
Positioned at the strategic entrance area between the exhibition hall and mini
theatre, the monument sign becomes both a focal point and photo opportunity for
the academic community and visitors.
CONCEPT: MONUMENTAL BRANDING
The "monumental branding" concept is applied to create a
commanding yet accessible presence. The monument is designed with generous
scale and premium materials, communicating permanence and institutional
authority important for a unit managing language competency.
The design leverages material contrast—dark granite against orange facade—to create visual drama ensuring the signage stands out in a busy context. Bold typography with high dimensionality provides optimal legibility from various distances and viewpoints, while its sculptural character makes the monument an autonomous architectural object.
DESIGN STRATEGIES
Monument Structure
The monument is designed with assertive geometry—rectangular base with
curved top edge softening the overall form. The base uses dark granite with
honed finishing and grid pattern on the surface, adding visual interest and
dimensional quality. Height of approximately 2.5-3 meters provides commanding
presence without being overwhelming, while 40-50 cm thickness creates
three-dimensionality important for outdoor sculptural objects.
The curved top edge helps soften form rigidity while being functional for
drainage. The monument's substantial mass ensures stability against wind and
provides interesting shadow play throughout the day.
Typography & Branding
Primary branding "P2B" uses dimensional letters in vibrant red
with bold sans-serif. Letters are mounted with 15-20 cm depth, creating strong
shadow lines enhancing readability under sunlight. Red color choice is
deliberate—communicating energy, passion, and the importance of language
proficiency with high visibility in various lighting conditions.
Secondary text "PUSAT PENGEMBANGAN BAHASA" and "UIN SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA" uses backlit channel letters with neutral colors and green backlighting, creating clear hierarchy. The institutional logo with backlighting is placed at top center, connecting the monument with broader institutional identity.
Landscaping Integration
Strategic palm tree placement creates vertical framing without blocking
views. Tree canopies provide dappled shade adding visual interest through
shadow patterns. Low-level plantings—combination of shrubs, groundcovers, and
flowering plants—soften platform hard edges and add seasonal variation.
Landscaping is also functional for drainage, reducing heat island effect,
and creating comfortable microclimate for photography activities.
MATERIALS & CRAFT
Material selection prioritizes durability for outdoor application. Dark
granite offers longevity, minimal maintenance, and weather resistance. Honed
finish provides sophisticated matte appearance reducing glare—important for
photography.
Dimensional letters use aluminum or stainless steel with powder-coated finish, allowing for internal LED installation. Joinery and mounting systems are carefully detailed for invisible appearance while ensuring structural stability. Base uses reinforced concrete foundation with proper footings to prevent settlement.
PHOTO CORNER FUNCTIONALITY
The monument is explicitly designed as photo opportunity with scale and
proportion accommodating individual and group photos. The platform provides
elevated stage making subjects prominent. Positioning leverages building facade
as controlled backdrop, avoiding visual clutter.
Multiple photo angles are possible—frontal for official documentation, angled views for dynamic compositions. Stepping stones add depth and leading lines in photographic composition.
CONCLUSION
The P2B Building Signage design demonstrates how functional signage can be
elevated into a meaningful architectural landmark. By integrating branding, photography opportunity, and landscape design, this monument
creates multi-layered value exceeding simple identification function.
The design's success lies in balancing monumentality and approachability. Generous scale and premium materials communicate institutional importance, while thoughtful detailing and landscape integration create welcoming character. For institutions building brand recognition and fostering community pride, investment in high-quality environmental graphics delivers significant returns—creating memorable experiences and shareable moments that extend institutional reach beyond physical campus boundaries.
